Partnership with Iraq

The Investigative Team concluded its mandate on 17 September 2024 pursuant to Security Council resolution 2697 (2023), and is no longer operational. This website captures its work and overall achievements. It is not updated.

Throughout the course of its mandate, and in line with its Terms of Reference (S/2018/118, Annex), the Investigative Team cooperated closely with a range of counterparts in Iraq, all of whom made essential contributions to its work and the implementation of its mandate. This included the National Coordinating Committee (NCC); a range of Iraqi authorities, including the Iraqi judiciary and those from the Kurdistan region; and local communities, notably survivors and witnesses, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Evidence of ISIL (Da’esh) crimes may have otherwise remained inaccessible if not for their willingness and close cooperation.

Iraqi nationals were also included in the staffing profile of the Investigative Team, based on an equal footing with international staff, in line with paragraph 14 of the Terms of Reference. One half of all staff members were national personnel (i.e., full-time staff and independent contractors) prior to the drawdown and liquidation of the Team.
